Waterman 0504 Gold-Filled Overlay Fountain Pen – Uncatalogued Repoussé Pattern (Vintage 1910s–1920s)
This vintage Waterman 0504 is a rare example of an uncatalogued overlay design produced during the golden age of American penmaking. While the 0504 model itself is documented—indicating a #4 nib and a high-grade gold-filled overlay—this particular repoussé pattern is not found in any known Waterman catalogs of the era.
The deeply sculpted, high-relief scrollwork displays an ornate Art Nouveau influence, far more intricate than the standard filigree or engine-turned overlays typical of Waterman’s published offerings. It’s likely this was a special-order, short-run, or jeweler’s issue pen—produced in very limited quantities. The overlay is applied over a black hard rubber barrel and section, and the pen fills via traditional eyedropper.
This pen is lovingly used and comes complete with an original Waterman’s Ideal presentation box—lined in deep purple velvet and a rare survival in its own right. The inclusion of the box really elevates this piece even further, offering a rare opportunity to acquire both pen and packaging from over a century ago. It is equipped with a 14k Waterman’s Ideal #4 Medium nib and fills via an eyedropper system. The pen shows some tarnishing to the cap and barrel (see images), and has the initials “HIB” engraved into the body.
