This Namiki Chinkin pen was created by a collaboration of maki-e artists (Kokkokai) in Japan. The pen matches the Yukari Royale size, has an 18k gold nib (#20 size), fills via Pilot/Namiki cartridge/converter (a CON-70 is included), and comes packaged in a velvet-lined wooden box.
In Japan, the rooster is considered a sacred animal; its crowing at dawn chases away darkness and evil spirits. This pen, made by Yasuji Sumi of the artisan group Kokkokai, depicts roosters in naturalistic poses, with close attention paid even to the texture of the feathers. Utilizing the Chinkin technique, the artist carves the ultra-fine pattern of the cat and reeds with a sharp instrument. Gold powder is then inlaid to fill in the carvings, and Urushi lacquer is used to coat the masterpiece. This is an extremely time-intensive process, as the skilled Maki-e artist must use care when carving the fine, narrow lines of the design. The artist Yasuji Sumi-San has signed his name in gold kanji on the barrel of the pen, nestled inconspicuously amongst the motif.
