The Namiki Chinkin Beauty of Autumns Leaves, or Kinshu, captures an autumn scene of a carp swimming among Japanese maple leaves. Created by Namiki artisan Yasuji Sumi, the design combines the movement of the carp with the scattered shapes of the leaves across the deep black lacquer surface.
The design is executed using the traditional Japanese Chinkin technique. The motif is carefully carved directly into the lacquer using specialized chisels. Lacquer is then applied to the carved areas before gold powder and gold leaf are inlaid, revealing the intricate lines and dots that give the artwork its depth and detail.
Against the black urushi, the different textures and applications of gold bring the carp and autumn leaves to life, creating a beautifully detailed scene that changes as the pen catches the light.
The pen is fitted with Namiki’s No. 10 18k gold nib and is available in Fine, Medium and Broad. It uses a cartridge/converter filling system.
