Montblanc Limited Edition 1868 Leo Tolstoy Fountain Pen
This pen is brand new, with full warranty and as you can see, is still sealed.
Issued every year since 1992 in a strictly limited edition, the Montblanc Writers Edition pays tribute to the greatest icons of literary history. Leo Tolstoy, the Russian master of realist fiction and author of epic works such as “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina”, is the latest figure of world literature to be honored with a limited edition inspired by his life and cultural legacy.
Yasnaya Polyana, the family home where Tolstoy was born and where he resided with his wife and children is the inspiration for the Limited Edition Leo Tolstoy. In this idyllic rural setting, Tolstoy adhered to his teachings of finding happiness in the simple life led by peasants, a theme reflected in the simplicity of the overall shape and design of the writing instrument. The characteristic pillars at the entrance of the Yasnaya Polyana estate are echoed in the shape of the top of the cap, which is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in black and white resin. Tolstoy’s philosophy of working the land with his own hands is symbolized in the elaborately handcrafted, hammered golden champagne case of the barrel. The barrel end is made of grenadilla wood, reminiscent of the many trees that grow around Yasnaya Polyana, the Tolstoy estate, in whose shade Tolstoy requested to be buried.
The pen is topped with a wonderful blue lacquer cap with a guilloché pattern, whose graceful lines are meant to evoke the aristocratic taste in Imperial Russia. A malachite stone is placed at the top of the barrel end: a rare and intense green gemstone.
In addition to the writer’s signature, the 1868 fountain pen also bears his portrait, embossed with considerable mastery on the 18 karat gold nib.
The fountain pen version of this edition is limited to 1868 pieces, based on the year of the first edition of “War and Peace”.
