Graphite Sketch by Brandon Lodewyk
Brandon’s graphite sketch, Balance, refers to how we are all striving to achieve that state of perfect balance in our daily lives. (I can so relate to this… I keep thinking that when I get the next chore done… when I get my admin in order… when I clear my desk, then all will be well…) Yet it is an illusion, and although we work hard to achieve that state of tranquility, as soon as we are knocked off our course, then cracks start to appear. This pen is a constant reminder of his advice: embrace the chaos!
Self-taught artist Brandon Lodewyk drew the Balance in pencil, ranging from 2B to 12B. (The photographs show the pen in ‘color’ and again in black and white, as the monochrome effect shows the details to better effect.) This pen was made by us at Stanford Pen Studio, illustrated by Brandon in graphite, then coated in a clear resin and given its final shape, polished, and buffed. We have added a black grip section, as well as a silver section ring, and our logo medallion (in silver) embedded in the cap finial.
Each of our hand-painted fountain pens is a 1/1 original work of art. No-one else will ever own an identical pen.
‘Jabulani’ means ‘Rejoice’ in Zulu, which is exactly what we feel about this fountain pen model. It is gently curvaceous, with a girth of 16 mm (0,6”), narrowing to a 11 mm (0,4”) grip section. The relatively large size of the model is to allow the artist sufficient space for their art. We make all our fountain pen and rollerball pen bodies in-house. Once the pen body has been painted or illustrated we coat it in a layer of clear resin to protect the artwork from being damaged during day-to-day use, making it a portable work of art.
Our logo medallion is embedded in the cap finial which is ever-so-slightly rounded, and the barrel finial is ever-so-slightly conical. The cap screws on to the barrel and is flush with the barrel. As with all our pens the cap does not post as this is an art pen and with repeated posting the threads could leave a mark on the clear coating covering the artwork. The Jabulani model comes with a hand-crafted cap band and section ring in either argentium silver or bronze, depending on which of these materials best suits the artwork.
