Visconti Red Urushi Limited Edition Fountain Pen
This stunning Visconti Urushi Limited Edition fountain pen, crafted in 1990, is presented in wonderful condition. Featuring a Japanese-style Fine 14k gold nib, it utilizes an eyedropper filling system with a shut-off valve.
Initially, Visconti planned to produce additional editions annually, but ultimately ceased production after this first limited run, making these pens even more scarce and desirable.
The meticulous urushi process involves harvesting sap from the Chinese lacquer tree through precise incisions in the bark. The sap, containing urushiol (the active oil in poison ivy), is expertly filtered, heated, and applied in numerous delicate layers—each requiring extensive drying periods. This demanding technique can take months for a single pen, resulting in an extraordinary depth of color and finish.
Only 100 pieces were crafted in this rich Red Urushi lacquer, and this particular pen is numbered #017/100. Similar in style and craftsmanship to renowned Sailor Urushi and Dunhill-Namiki Urushi pens, this Visconti offers impressive proportions, matching the Montblanc 149 in size and surpassing it slightly when posted.
